We Found a Cabin, Our Closet Wallpaper & Other Things You Need to Know!

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

This post is part of a new series called “Noteworthy” where I’ll be sharing quick project updates, news, interesting links from around the web and products I love. It’s pretty much a spot for anything that doesn’t warrant it’s own post, but still deserves some love.

Our new cabin

Well that was crazy!
This week we launched a website, found a lake cabin, and installed skylights. Whoa! We’re probably a little crazy, but all the best people are.

First things first. THANK YOU! This website didn’t happen overnight. It was a true labor of love, but none of that would have mattered if no one had showed up to support me. Your support really is everything. If you missed it, you can read more about why I launched a new website here.

In other big news, we found a charming cabin in Minnesota lake country bursting with potential. We don’t close until the beginning of December, but I’ll definitely be sharing my plans and inspiration in the coming weeks. We’ll be spending most of our summer weekends there, as well as, some winter days, as a ski hill is nearby.

VELUX Skylights before VELUX Skylights After with exposed trusses

The giveaway you don’t want to miss.

If you were watching our stories this week, you may have seen that we partnered with VELUX to install skylights in our primary bedroom. The progress pictures make it clear the before and after of this room is going to be DRAMATIC. Little surprise though, that’s not the only place we had skylights installed. So stay tuned and don’t forget enter to win a dramatic makeover of your own. VELUX is giving away 2 of the same skylights we had installed, plus are covering the cost of installation. Click here to enter. It just takes a minute. The giveaway closes Oct. 12.

Welcome to Pretty Domesticated, a lifestyle website

A welcome letter from Katie Sullivan
Brand new site! And it feels like home. We can’t wait to show you around our lifestyle website.

Hello! Welcome to Pretty Domesticated. A brand new lifestyle website by yours truly, Katie Sullivan.

You might want to sit down. I have a lot to cover and you have a lot to explore. When I set out to create a new website, I thought long and hard about what would serve you, my community, best. I thought about the content you respond to and the questions you ask. “Where did you get that?” for instance. Then I acted. This business journey has been about you.

It’s also been about me. I felt the urge to create a platform that I owned, so I could take control of my business and my life. I love Instagram, but it doesn’t always love me. This is a place where we can come together day after day, and not have to worry about an algorithm. PD is now a blog, shop and all around resource for pretty things. There’s still a huge focus on design. We’ll address your design and decor questions, help you source things to shop, and touch on design tips and tricks. We’re also expanding into a broader lifestyle category where we’ll be talking about entertaining, recipes and beauty too.

I can offer you more here. This site is my answer to “work smarter, not harder.” You can easily shop my home, find exclusive content, stay connected and find products hand picked by me in one designated spot. You should be able to find the answers to your questions quickly. If you can’t, let me know. I’m still happy to help.

You’ll also have the opportunity to comment on posts and ask questions that pop up. You can even start now! Please comment below on anything you want me to cover.

Things are changing at Pretty Domesticated, but they’re changing for the better. I promise. I’ll still be your design-loving friend sharing on Instagram, but instead of disappearing into the social media abyss, all that information will have a permanent home. This is my transition from reluctant influencer to home lifestyle brand. I hope you’ll support me.

This website did not happen overnight. It’s been a labor of love, and came with a lot of help from a very talented website team. Countless hours of work have finally brought us to Launch Day! There were moments I truly thought this day would never come.

I hope you find yourself coming back time and time again for inspiration. I hope you learn something, and maybe you can teach me a little something too. It’s my wish that this site brings you even the smallest bit of joy. Most of all, I hope you love it! None of this would be possible without your support. Thanks for stopping by.

Best, Katie

Our Plans for a Coastal Dining Room

Design Plan
Who better to turn to for coastal dining room furniture than Serena & Lily. We’re planning a coastal + modern mix for our Fort Myers vacation home project.

*This post is sponsored by Serena & Lily. All thoughts an opinions are my own.

When it comes to coastal decor, no one does it better than Serena & Lily. So when we were brought on to design a dining room for a vacation home in Fort Myers, FL, with a modern coastal vibe, we headed straight to their website for inspiration.

The right light can transform a room. In this case, the woven pendant in the image above, was the inspiration that sparked the design. A relaxed mix of coconut beads and abaca make this tiered chandelier versatile-yet-refined. Its dramatic scale balances beautifully with airy designs, without overpowering. Serena & Lily huge Fall Sale is currently underway site wide, making it the perfect time to invest in larger scale pieces that are sure to become heirlooms.

When it comes to coastal design, we often turn to the sea for a calm and laid back color palette. But for this dining room, we opted to deepen the blues and up the contrast for a more masculine look. The room calls for woven textures, paired with structure lines.

Click Here to Shop All Our Picks from the Serena & Lily.

coastal dining room

The lighting takes texture to new heights bringing a warm, handcrafted look to the room. However, we didn’t want the texture to end there. For a more modern spin on coastal dining, we opted to end cap the dining table with two chunky, handwoven seagrass chairs. Chic around a table, a great accent piece for the living room, this chair adds natural beauty wherever it goes. These keep the look casual and adds great texture to the mix. Performance cushions serve up comfort and are low maintenance. Design tip – you can have white chairs if you invest in performance fabric!

The Before

The photos below are from the listing photos and changes are already underway. While large, the space lacked structure and sophistication. The layout of the space will stay relatively the same, but the walls are in for a dramatic change. To lighten the space, we are adding paneling to the dining wall and wainscoting throughout. The walls will get a dose of Sherwin Williams Extra White.

See all our posts featuring our Modern Coastal Project in Fort Myers here.

The Design for the Modern Coastal Dining Room

We’re excited to share our final design board for the dining room. Organic texture and the deep colors in the rug and Windsor style chairs, bring depth to an otherwise airy space.

We include tabletop accessories in our design board because furniture aren’t the only items that make a dining room shine. Dress up your table with beautiful essentials. The dining room should be finished just in time for the holidays. This is great news for us, as it is where we will be celebrating Christmas! (The home is owned by my parents.) We can’t wait to bring everyone together in style.

Modern Coastal Dining Room Plan

  • Ventana Chandelier: The relaxed mix of coconut beads and abaca on this large scale chandelier is versatile and refined.
  • Tucker Dining Chair: With the curved back of a traditional Windsor, it has a more compact frame that gives it a modern edge.
  • Islesboro Chair: Chunky, handwoven seagrass keeps the look casual and adds great texture to the mix.
  • Mirabelle Rug: While the pattern is bold, it’s surprisingly easy to layer.
  • Reese Dining Table: Good design is as much about function as it is about form, this is generously sized to be on-call when extra guests arrive.
  • Islesboro Chair: Chunky, handwoven seagrass keeps the look casual and adds great texture.
  • Beachside Bowls: Handcrafted with mango wood, these bowls add the perfect natural touch.
  • Salento Linen Napkins: Crisp, clean, and made of soft linen, this classic napkin set is a tabletop essential.
  • Beachside Serving Board: Whitewashed mango wood and a dip-dye finish bring the perfect mix of natural and modern style to this serving board.
  • Cayman Seagrass-Wrapped Pitcher: This seagrass-wrapped pitcher adds coastal charm.
  • Ombre Cheese Set (Set of 3): Made of hand carved, hand dyed teak, the handles feature an ombre effect.
  • Ombre Serving Set: We love the simple beauty of these serving pieces.
  • Millerton Footed Fruit Bowl: This stylish mix of marble and brass is not just chic, it’s also a functional tabletop essential that looks fabulous anywhere and everywhere.
  • Portland Bone Inlay Tray: Pretty enough to hold its own as a decorative piece, it’s also entirely practical.

The September Five: Including My Favorite Apple Pie Recipe + The Jacket I Can’t Stop Wearing

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

The September Five - Favorite Apple Pie Recipe

The Five
The apple pie recipe I can’t quit, an affordable jean jacket I can’t stop wearing, a cozy blanket, my new favorite lamp, and a new spin on fall florals.

Welcome to “The Five,” a new monthly feature where I highlight five things that captured my attention or ended up in my shopping cart that month.

September is my favorite month of the entire year. The weather is perfect, the layered clothes are sophisticated, and don’t even get me started on nature’s color palette. My love of dusty colors and warm tones meets it’s match when fall decor hits the shelf. In shorter terms, September and I are soul mates, and fall is my season. Sign me up for everything warm, cozy, but not yet freezing.

Which brings me to my mission to perfect apple pie while the weather is on the crisp side. I started with my tried and true favorite cookbook for easy baked goods, Magnolia Table by Joanna Gaines. While Jo’s biscuits and lemon pie have made our regular baked good’s lineup, Dulche de Leche Apple Pie was somehow overlooked until recently. When I read that dulche de leche, a caramelized sweetened milk, was included, I knew it was the apple pie recipe to start my journey. After all, my love of a caramel is right top there with my love of fall and coffee. While I’ve started to play with creating my own recipe, this is a great recipe if you are looking for a caramel-y spin on a fall’s most classic pie.

Click here to shop my favorite cookbooks.

Apple pie wasn’t the only thing that captured my attention this month. When curating The PD Collection a generously sized plaid-patterned throw caught my eye. I instantly knew I had to include it in our blanket selection. But then I stumbled upon a modern beauty of a lamp, with a brass body and belgian linen shade, and it never left my mind. The table lamp unsurprising has a starring role in our collection. It will be making its way to my own home soon.

Rounding out the best of September, is the affordable jean jacket I throw on day after day. Plus a new spin on fall florals. Psst… Dried flowers are having a major moment this fall. Shop my picks below!

The Outfits I Packed for My Recent Travel

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

Stylish Clothing Packed for Travel

Travel Tip
Pack a few light weight pieces that easily transition from day to night in your carry on bag. That way you are covered if your baggage is lost. I pack a sweater, light weight dress, and a pair of dressier shoes + a swimsuit if I’m traveling somewhere warm. (L to R) Dress, Sweater, Clip, Flower TopLeapord Print Dress, Linen Dress, Bag

This summer, I saw a major increase in my travel schedule, which offered me a chance for me to update my wardrobe. (You can shop my all recent fashion buys here.) Packing outfits for travel isn’t exactly a relaxing process for me. However, the silver lining to the endeavor is that I step up my fashion game. It’s likely the limited space that drives me to only make room for my best apparel.

This time around, it was time for some major wardrobe elevation because, let’s be honest, it’s been all lounge wear lately due to the current work from home environment we live in and general Mom life.  When packing I stuck to a uniform, of sorts, that could easily transition from day to night, or be dressed up or down.

Work conferences for myself and Daren brought me to California once and us to Chicago twice in less than a month. This meant I needed to pack professional and casual wear. Luckily, there was also lots of opportunity for date night outfits during our travel. Since I haven’t been wearing my dressier clothing items lately, I jumped at the opportunity to pack the more fashion-forward pieces that were collecting dust in my closet. You can find more of my day-to-day looks here.

The Look for Less: Rattan Storage Bench

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

Can you say score? There’s a lot of fabulous furniture in the world, but when I find something that combines pretty looks with ample storage it catches my attention. That was 100% the case, when I stumbled upon a gorgeous, extra-long, woven rattan storage bench with contrasting leather straps during a late night, should-have-been-sleeping shopping session. Despite the sleep deprivation, I securely saved it to the “must use” list in the back of my head. So when the time came to figure out how we were going to store the army of stuffed animals in our son’s room I instinctively knew the answer.

I never looked back. That is until today, when I found another rattan storage bench with the same beauty + function combo at a lower price point! I’m pretty sure, when you find not one, but two, unicorns you’re obligated to share. Right?

Weekend Transformation: How We Styled A Coastal Entry

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

Bland to Sophisticated
Affordable decor, paneling and white paint transformed a boring entry into a bright, coastal welcome over the course of a weekend.

Sometimes all you need is a weekend to completely turn things around in a small space. Though new decor and a little bit of white paint don’t hurt either. This was the case in the entry at our Modern Coastal Project in Fort Myers, FL.

This project is pretty personal! Our new junior designer, David, who happens to be my brother, is running the show. This is also his home, and our extended family’s vacation home.

While the home is only a few years old, the entry lacked character. “It felt like a pass through rather than a moment,” said David. Over the course of a few days, glossy white floor to ceiling board and batten replaced the formerly beige walls. The wall detail was intentionally kept streamlined and delicate for a modern look.  New 3.5″ trim was used on all three on the entry’s wall, while the existing crown and baseboards were repurposed into the final look. The walls were finished off with Sherwin Williams Extra White for a bright, inviting look that created a beautiful backdrop for coastal styling.

Click here to read all our Modern Coastal Project posts.

How We Styled the Entry for A Coastal Look

An affordable woven light fixture and coastal-inspired console table anchor the final look. The woven detail on the entry console’s drawer fronts echo the weave of the lighting, while ottomans soften and ground the coastal entry. The table lamp and mirror are no longer available, but you can shop similar items and the rest of the look below! Then visit our shop for all our favorite products.

We are excited to announce that you’ll be seeing a lot more of this home in the coming months. We partnered with one of our favorite brands for the dining room.

How to Keep Your Outdoor Furniture Clean

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

How to Keep Your Outdoor Furniture Clean

Keeping Outdoor Furniture Clean is Possible
Outdoor furniture is built to withstand the elements, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t show wear and tear. Regular cleaning will ensure the longevity and beauty of your outdoor furnishings.

Outdoor furniture is durable, not indestructible. There’s a few thing you need to know to keep outdoor furniture clean. While outdoor furniture is built to withstand the elements, that doesn’t always mean it makes it through the colder months without coming out a little disheveled. With a little tender loving care, your outdoor living spaces can be lounge ready for summers on end — no matter what the weather brings. We try to dedicate two days to cleaning our outdoor furniture each year, usually at the beginning of spring, when we set everything up, and in the fall, shortly before we pack up for the winter.

If you invest in even one annual cleaning, you’ll transform your outdoor space for the better. The most important part is selecting durable all-weather furniture, but after that these tips will keep your chairs, stools, umbrellas and tables looking fresh season after season.

Click here to shop our outdoor spaces.

How to Keep Outdoor Furniture Clean

Spray cushions thoroughly with water periodically to remove any surface dirt. Then spot treat with a gentle cleanser as needed.

General Tips for Taking Care of Outdoor Furniture

  • Review your manufacturer’s care instructions. Care varies from product to product. You can usually find this information with the packaging, online, or you can contact the maunfacturer for more information.
  • Use furniture covers whenever possible, especially during incremental weather, to preserve and protect your furniture. Many manufacturer’s make covers specifically designed for their products, but you can find generic covers here. Don’t forget to let your covers dry out completely before storing them as they can develop mold. You’ll want to clean your furniture covers periodically, as well.
  • Consider moving furniture indoors when not in use for an extended period. We move all of our furniture inside during the extremely cold winter months, but it might not make sense to move your large pieces inside if you live in a mild climate. In that case, consider moving small pieces and cushions to a garage or shed to protect them from the elements when not in regular use.
  • Utilize proper sealants whenever necessary and re-seal at least once per year.
  • Vacuum outdoor rugs regularly and spot clean as needed.
  • Use a dry, soft dusting cloth to clean all lighting. Don’t use household liquid cleaners or polishing agents on lighting as these can discolor or damage metal finishes.

How to Keep White Outdoor Cushions Clean (Or any color, really!)

Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are your friend outside or in! This fabric withstands UV radiation, mold, mildew, and staining. We usually spray our cushions down with a little water when they are looking dingy or ¼ cup dishwashing detergent to 8 cups of lukewarm water if they’re really dingy.  We recommend using Dawn dish soap for your detergent. Thoroughly clean all our outdoor cushions at the start and end of each outdoor season using these steps:

  1. Prepare a solution of 1 cup bleach and 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid per gallon (8 cups) of clean water.
  2. Spray on entire area and allow the solution to soak into the fabric.
  3. Scrub vigorously with a soft bristle brush, sponge, or clean towel.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  5. Allow fabric to air dry in a well-ventilated, clean, dry area.
  6. If stain and/or mildew persist, bleach quantities may be increased.
  7. Continue to spot clean with a gentle cleanser throughout the season.

How to Care for Wood Furniture
Our rattan planter shows some patina from the elements even thought it gets a bit of cover from the roof above. To lengthen the life-span of rattan pieces, bring them inside when it rains.

How to Clean Wood Outdoor Furniture

Some outdoor woods fare better than others outdoors. Teak, acacia and eucalyptus are solid and resilient. But keep in mind, wood is impacted by the weather, just like in nature. Teak and acadia develop a silver patina, but that’s 100% okay! We strongly believe patina adds to the beauty of outdoor furniture.

If  you prefer to keep a little bit or most the warmth of your wood, we recommend cleaning and oiling your furniture one to two times per year. This will also help prevent cracking. We use Watco Teak Oil in the spring to refresh our own teak furniture, and we oil our foldable wood chairs with Tung Oil.

For everyday maintenance, simply wipe away dirt using a damp, non-abrasive cloth. For stubborn spots, use a cleansing solution of ¼ cup dishwashing detergent and 8 cups of lukewarm water.

How to Clean Metal Outdoor Furniture

Steel and aluminum are one of the easiest materials to care for outdoors, but are susceptible to rust. A rag and soapy water will usually do the trick. If you discover rust, use a silicone spray, like this, too lubricate. Never use bleach or chlorides on aluminum as they could lead to staining and pitting. You’ll also want to avoid abrasive cleaning pads or concentrated alkaline base solutions.

How to care for stone outdoor furniture
We use a soft cloth to wipe away dust and debris on our outdoor stone coffee table.

How to Clean Stone and Ceramic Tables

We love our indoor/outdoor composite coffee table but it does require a little maintenance to use it outside. For stone tables, apply a sealer every three to six months to give the surface extra protection. If you notice the temperature dropping, it’s a good idea to bring your piece inside to avoid a natural reaction like cracking. To clean, simply use a soft-bristled nylon brush or soft cloth to wipe away dust and debris. Blot surface with a few drops of a neutral pH cleaner or mild liquid dish washing detergent and warm water. But rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution, as too much cleaner or soap may leave a film or cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids. For everyday care, use coasters, trivets or placemats to protect the finish.

How to Clean Rattan & Wicker Outdoor Furniture

As like many of our favorite things, rattan is admittedly a little high maintenance. Rattan is often described as wicker, but there is actually a big difference between the two. Rattan is a material, while wicker is a weaving technique. While strong, natural wicker furniture made from rattan is susceptible to the elements. We recommend keeping natural rattan indoors or under a covered porch, unless you’re using it temporarily for a dry afternoon outdoors. However, sometimes we bend our own rules! We couldn’t resist the beauty of a rattan planters outside, so we tucked ours under a slightly covered area for a little protection. It shows notable patina, but we are okay with that.

If you love the look of rattan, but don’t want to maintenance. There are a ton of great of all-weather wicker furniture available, like our egg chair.

For wicker and similar frames, wipe with a soft, dry cloth in the direction of any rows rather than diagonally, which can force debris under the woven material. When dust and debris is left to accumulate it can grind into the furniture fibers, causing unnecessary wear and dirty discoloration. A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment can help dislodge and remove any soil within the weave.

After the Dust Settles: The Products I Use to Clean Up After a Renovation

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

*This post is sponsored by Goo Gone. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We do a lot of before and afters around here, but there is a lot that happens behind the scenes in between.

It usually goes something like this: We plan the project. We begin implementing the plan. Then we make a big mess and afterwards we clean. We typically make a few mistakes along the way. We problem solve said mistakes. Then we clean again. Now we play around with the finishing touches, and then, you guessed it, we clean. Before the big reveal always comes the cleanup. Heavy duty messes, require heavy duty cleanup. Goo Gone is my go-to brand to help clean-up after the dust settles. You can purchase Goo Gone products at all major retailers and online on Amazon.

Our master closet is currently in the in-between. (Side note: I completely underestimate the length of this project!) I won’t pretend to be a cleaning expert, but after so much time spent cleaning up, I was bound to pick up a few secret weapons along the way. Here are the five Goo Gone products I’m using to get our master closet prepped & ready for it’s big reveal:

Goo Gone Goo & Adhesive Remover Aerosol
America’s #1 formula for removing gummy, sticky, gooey messes. This formula safely removes messes and allows for a more precise spray to the areas where you are trying to remove goo. The removeable scraping tool cap came in handy, when I removed the construction glue stuck to our mirror.

Goo Gone Heavy Duty Wipes
These wipes are a personal favorite, as they can quickly tackle even the toughest messes without tearing. They’re great for grease, grime, scuff marks, adhesive residue, permanent marker and more. Read about how I recently used them to clean up paint over-spray in my son’s bedroom here.

Goo Gone Hand Cleaner
Nail holes. Got to fill them, but it always makes a mess. I’m notorious for getting my hands really dirty when spackling and it can be really hard to get that gunk off. Goo Gone Hand Cleaner is a heavy duty, water-based formula containing fine pumice plus Aloe Vera & Vitamin E to moisturize hands while cleaning away the toughest grime. No water needed! Daren is a big fan of this product too.

Goo Gone Latex Cleaner
Every paint project there is an oopsie moment. Which is usually exasperated by the fact we are pretty lax in our paint prep. AKA, we don’t usually paint with a drop cloth. I’ll be keeping this on hand while we prime and paint the closet. Latex Paint Clean makes it easy to clean spills, splatter, brushes, and more. It even works on dry paint!

Goo Gone All Purpose Cleaner
A tried-and-true all purpose cleaner. You can remove messes from almost any surface with this fast-acting formula. I used it to remove grease & grime from our new full length mirror after it was installed.

5 Summer Favorites from Serena & Lily

The Summer Solstice is here, and it’s time to celebrate! It’s time to take advantage of the longest, sunniest day of the year. Serena & Lily is my go-to for a laid back vibe all year long, but that’s especially true in the summer, when the weather is warm and the sun is bright.

Outdoor Patio Furniture

Now that we are home pretty much 24/7, we’ve been spending lots of time in our backyard and on our patio. I’m a big advocate for creating a home that is your happy place no matter what season of life you’re in. Right now our backyard is my favorite place to be. Going to our backyard almost feels like a vacation.

Capri Fouta Beach Towel in Yellow

Serena & Lily towel are the must have accessory of the summer! Our Capri towels are the perfect weight and super absorbent. Plus, they bring a splash of style to our kiddie-pool parties, with narrow and wide stripes, edged with a hand-knotted fringe.

Kids’ Riviera Play Table & Chairs

With all the time at home, our craft time has increased. This table & chair combo is a breeze to move around and gives everyone ample room for games and crafts. I keep them right by our patio doors, so they can be easily moved to patio on nice days. You’ll love the easy-to-clean top.

Westchester Tray

Give me everything caned! This tray’s sturdy design make for easy entertaining whether I’m serving lunch or evening cocktail on our patio. When I’m not using it outside, I use it on my kitchen counter to add a touch of tradition and tropical flair.

Riviera Arm Chair

If you’ve been here awhile, you probably know I’ve been singing these chairs praises for years. For good reason, they hold up to heavy use in a busy household and can be hosed off! You can usually find them around my indoor table, but on special occasions I like to move them outside to bring our patio style up a notch. If you want to keep yours out daily, go for their outdoor riviera chair, made with a powder coated aluminum frame that’s fabulously weather-friendly.

Cayman Seagrass-Wrapped Pitcher

This pitcher makes a great gift for your favorite hostess (or for yourself.) It brings a coastal charm to any table, inside or outside. We like too fill ours with lemonade.
