How VELUX Skylights Transformed Our Home + Win a Brighter Space

The Power of Natural Light & Air
When in it came time to update the darkest & dreariest rooms in our home we turned to VELUX skylights. Photo by Jill Ockhardt Blaufuss

When I got into interior design, I learned very quickly the power of natural light in your home. The rooms you’re pinning on Pinterest and saving on Instagram, rest assured, are flooded with natural light. Furnishing and styling can work a lot of magic, but nothing gives you an advantage like starting off with good natural light does.

The problem was I didn’t have any design experience when we built our first house nearly a decade ago and their were a few rooms that I could never get right, or more accurately pretended didn’t exist. The architecture lacked from the start and a big reason they felt dull and lifeless was that they lacked light. We knew we needed a solution, but we weren’t sure where to start. That’s when I discovered VELUX skylights.

Partnering with VELUX to add skylights was the perfect solution to our problem. Not only did they bring in natural light, they also added a touch of elegance to our once dull spaces. The process of installation was simpler than we imagined, and now we’re enjoying the benefits of brighter and beautiful rooms.

When to Consider Using Skylights

Before we get into the details about how we transformed our primary suite and kid’s bathroom, plus how you can win a set of our exact skylights, we should talk a bit about why you shouldn’t overlook using skylights, whether you are building new or renovating.  Now obviously, having windows in every room is ideal, but what happen’s if your windows face the house next to you, mature tree block your view, or you couldn’t avoid an interior room with no windows? Look up, you’re going to want to consider optimizing your best friend, natural light, with skylights. Your Velux consultant or contractor can help you determine the best placement in your room.

Not to mention they improve your experience in your home for other reasons too. Studies have shown that increased exposure to natural light can improve mood, boost productivity, and even regulate sleep patterns. Fresh air, on the other hand, can improve overall air quality and reduce the risk of respiratory issues.

Now that we covered the big picture, let’s get into how VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights and a Sun Tunnel skylight transformed two of our bathrooms and our primary bedroom.

The Before’s

As you can see in the images above our bathrooms weren’t exactly overflowing with light, particularly our kid’s bathroom. The before image is actually backlit so you could see some of the room’s aesthetics prior to its renovation. Without the lights on it was pitch black. Not to mention, with the lights  on that blue green paint transformed into a painful aqua. I’ve spent the past 8 years pretending this bathroom didn’t exist with a lot of success because even our kid’s avoided using it.

Our primary bathroom was in much better shape, but was feeling a little dated and not as inviting as I would have liked.

Our primary bedroom, is on the larger size, but only has one North facing window that doesn’t bring in much light. As you can see in the before images, we tried to lean into the moodiness of the room by painting it a dark.

It looked okay. You can see how far my styling has come and some true before images here. But honestly, with three young kids me and my husband don’t need it to be cozy to fall asleep. On the other hand, natural light in the morning to wake us up-that’s something we could use.

Skylight Install

The Process: Opening Up Ceilings

Installing VELUX skylights was just the first step towards achieving the desired look and feel in our primary suite. To truly transform the ambiance of our space, we needed to go through the process of opening up the ceilings and wrapping trusses.

This process involved cutting into the ceiling to create the necessary space for the skylights. It also meant wrapping the trusses with wooden planks to create a more polished look. It was quite an undertaking, but the end result was worth the effort.

By opening up our ceilings and wrapping our trusses, our primary suite was transformed into a bright and spacious oasis. It’s amazing how much more open and airy it feels.

If you are considering adding VELUX skylights to your home, we highly recommend also exploring the option of opening up your ceilings and wrapping your trusses. It will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home, but also improve its functionality.

Integrating VELUX Skylights into Our Kids’ Bathroom Design

When we decided to renovate our kids’ bathroom, we knew we wanted to incorporate natural light just like we did in our primary suite. We opted for a skylight, strategically placed above vanity, as well as a Sun Tunnel Skylight in the shower room to provide ample light. The difference the sun tunnel, in particular, made was jaw-dropping. It provides bright clear daylight and even serves as a night light in the evening.

Here is how the Sun Tunnel Skylight works: The installer cuts a hole in the roof and installs a lens that captures sunlight. The lens is connected via a highly reflective aluminum tube that runs through the attic to the ceiling below. A diffuser or fixture that looks like a spotlight or recessed lighting glows with natural light throughout the day. Sun Tunnels are especially good for small spaces. The tube can be installed around attic obstructions such as HVAC units, trusses, rafters and exhaust fans, making Sun Tunnels ideal for rooms that don’t have a direct path from the ceiling to the roof above.

The beauty of VELUX  is their products can be customized to fit any style or design preference. We were able to choose the size and finishes to perfectly complement our bathroom design. It’s amazing how something as simple as a skylight and sun tunnel can transform a space. The added brightness creates a cheerful atmosphere, which is especially helpful during the early morning rush before school.

Now, our kids’ bathroom feels welcoming. It’s bright, airy, and inviting – the perfect space for our children to start and end their days. And with the added benefits of natural light and fresh air, we know we’ve made the right choice.

The Benefits: Improved Aesthetic and Functionality

The skylights themselves added a beautiful and unique design element to our ceilings. Plus, the improved ventilation from the skylights and open ceilings made a noticeable difference in our home’s overall comfort level.

Even in the hottest and most humid days of summer, we were able to keep our home cool and fresh with a gentle breeze from the skylights. With the ability to open up the skylights, we can circulate stale air out of the room. This has not only improved the air quality but also made the space more comfortable overall. The addition of skylights has also allowed us to reduce our reliance on artificial lighting and ventilation, ultimately saving on energy costs.

Our VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights, are even equipped with a rain sensor that closes the skylight at the first sign of bad weather. Plus, since they are solar powered, no wiring required during installation.

The difference is remarkable. The natural light streaming in from above brightened ours spaces and gave them a warm and inviting feel. We find ourselves spending more time in these rooms, simply enjoying the ambiance.

One surprising benefit was that adding VELUX skylights to our primary bedroom was a game-changer for our daily routine. Waking up to natural light and fresh air has transformed the way we start our day. The skylight’s solar powered shades  are controlled by remote or smartphone. We have even automated ours to close in the evening and open in the morning using the VELUX Active with Netatmo smartphone app.

Overall, the benefits of adding VELUX skylights to our home went beyond our initial expectations. The improved aesthetic and functionality have truly transformed our spaces and we couldn’t be happier with the results.

Your No-Stress Guide for How to Mix Metals in Design

How to Mix Metals
Whether you’re mixing brass & nickel finishes or chrome & champagne or anything else, there are a few keys to remember in learning how to mix metals in your home.

Over the years, answering your design questions on Instagram has become one of my favorite pastimes. Every time I open that question box, I see a few common topics I never expected — and one of them is, “How should I mix metal finishes and tones in my home?” It can be a tricky topic, for sure, but it’s absolutely gorgeous when it’s done right. So I decided it’s finally time for a tell-all here on the blog. Get ready for a sophisticated, classic look that you’re going to love.

Busting Some Common Myths about Mixing Metals

Always use the same metal throughout an entire room.

If you’ve ever been told that all of your metals should match, somebody lied to you. In fact, most designers believe that too much matching in a room leads to a bland, flat look. Mixed metals are a super easy way to create a layered and interesting look that designers love — and I think you will, too!

Mixed metals in transitional sunroom family room.

Steel + Brass
Mixing metals isn’t limited to permanent fixtures. In our sunroom, while the chandelier and curtain rods match, brass decor brings dimension.

You can only mix metals in kitchens and bathrooms.

These two rooms may be the most obvious places to mix metals — think plumbing fixtures, cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and appliances — but they’re certainly not the only options. There are countless little details that make up any room, from picture frames to lighting to small pieces of decor on shelves or tables. Accents like these are a great way to add accent metals to bedrooms and living spaces.

Mixing metals in your home is an exact science.

Actually, there are no “rules” for which metals should be paired together, but stay tuned for some tips that will make your design choices easier. It’s absolutely fine, even encouraged, to play with warm and cool tones in the same space. But before we get into the design details, a quick disclaimer: don’t overthink it. Use what speaks to you, mixing tones and finishes that feel complementary and classic. The most important thing about your space is that you love and enjoy it!

A Quick Guide to Common Metals + Finishes

If mixing metals is new to you, these categories will help! When you’re choosing your metals, Consider the hues of the existing decor (or whatever you’ve planned on your mood board, if it’s a new space). For example, we’re using brass as our primary metal for our Belgian Treehouse project, because it pairs perfectly with the warm undertones found in the paint we chose and the home’s natural wood ceilings.

Metals By Tone

  • Warm
    • Brass
    • Copper
    • Gold
  • Cool
    • Aluminum
    • Stainless steel
    • Nickel
    • Silver
    • Pewter
    • Chrome
  • Neutral
    • Cast iron
    • Steel
    • Matte black
    • Any black metals

Metals By Finish

  • Brushed: Brushing gives metal a distinctive look, as it retains some (but not all) of its luster and is given a pattern of very fine lines parallel to the brushing direction. This classic finish is a great foundation in just about any design, because it plays well with others.
  • Polished: This super shiny finish has a mirror-like quality and a classic look you’ll often find in bathroom or traditional spaces. It’s used most on brass and silver metals.
  • Satin: This finish lies perfectly between brushed and polished, offering a quiet but elegant quality. It works best with silver toned metals, and it’s a perfect choice when you’re looking for a subtle tone to complement something louder.
  • Antiqued: If you want to get the patina without the time, antiqued metals are for you. This finish is manufactured to look like weathered metal from the Old World. It pairs well with moodier spaces.
  • Hammered: This finish looks exactly how it sounds — like it’s been pounded all over with a hammer! It’s commonly seen on copper or pewter metals, and it typically goes best with rustic decor and homes.

My Favorite Finishes

  • Unlaquered brass adds warmth and patinas beautifully over time. It’s commonly used in bathrooms and kitchens because it plays well with others, but tends to make a bold statement. I love to use brass on mirrors, light fixtures, faucets, and more, but our favorite way to use it is hardware, because I find it most impactful in a single large dose.
  • Polished nickel is probably the most used metal in my designs. It’s elegant, but it hangs in the background and lets others shine. Its warm undertones make it a particularly good partner for brass, and it’s a popular choice for plumbing fixtures and lighting.
  • Matte black works like a neutral, since it pairs well with any other finish. I like to use it in lighting and drapery hardware selections, but it works well for any hardware, or even plumbing fixtures in modern homes.
  • Stainless steel might bring the kitchen to mind, but it works well in bathrooms too. It’s really versatile, so I use it when I need an easy pairing with another metal, cool or warm.

How to Mix Metals in Your Home

Time for what you’ve all been waiting for: the nitty gritty, “how-to” guide for metal mixing. I promise, with all the above information in hand, it’s actually super simple!

Step 1: Select your metals.

There’s no need to go overboard here — three or less is a good rule of thumb for any home. I’d consult the list above and choose two or three whose undertones work well together. For example, nickel’s warm undertones makes it a better partner for brass or gold than chrome would.

If you feel like breaking some rules, black metal is the way to do it. Black is considered a neutral finish, meaning it goes with both warm and cool tones. If I was ever planning to expand into 4 finishes on a project, black would certainly be one of them.

Step 2: Choose one dominant metal.

Mixing metals is almost never a 50/50 split. Instead, select one dominant metal and add in 1-2 accents that complement it well. Focus on what’s permanent first, like lighting and plumbing fixtures. You can mix in your complementary metals when you’re choosing smaller details later on in the process, like mirrors, cabinet hardware, or decor accents. Plumbing and light fixtures are much harder to change down the road, so you’ll want to make sure to get that one “right” first.

If you’re working with an entire house, your dominant metal should flow consistently through the entire home — but you can change your accent metals from room to room. For example, use the same metal for all of your door handles, but play with the hardware in specific spaces. In our Fargo home, we used polished nickel as our main metal, then played with brass and matte black accents through our hardware, decor and lighting selections.

If you’re renovating a single room or space, the same “rule” applies — choose your star finish and let the other one or two play supporting roles. A quick note: Brass will usually become the star when used, even if it’s not the most used metal in the room. It has some serious “main character” energy. In our Bluemont Bath project, brass is the star, while polished nickel and stainless steel serve as supporting characters.

Mixed metals in a primary bathroom.

Step 3: Be strategic with placement.

There are a few different ways to mix your metals in your home, and none of them are random! Here are some of my favorite ideas:

  • Separate your metals by height, so the same finishes and tones live on the same plane. In my designs, I’ll often use one metal for lighting fixtures and another for hardware and faucets to create a cohesive blend.
  • Separate your metals by category, using one metal for faucets and another for mirrors. In our Bluemont Bath project, all the plumbing fixtures — including the faucets, shower head and tub filler — are stainless steel. All the hardware is polished nickel, while the lighting and decorative accents are brass.
  • Separate your metals simply, like we did in our Fargo kitchen. Our finishes are all silver, with the exception of our island, which we recently updated to have unlacquered brass hardware.

Step 4: Create balance.

By spreading your dominant finish and tone throughout your home, you give your mixed metals some needed context, balancing the finishes and allowing them to work together throughout the home. The dominant metal in your home does not necessarily have to be the dominant metal in each room — but having it as one of the metals in every room creates continuity.

Remember, mixing metals isn’t limited to permanent fixtures! You can use decor to create balance and bring character too. In our Fargo home, brass fixtures are limited, while brass decor is abundant. As you select and style vases, countertop décor, and shelf accessories, keep that 3-metals-max guideline in mind.

How to Protect Your RH Dining Table (or Any Unfinished Wood)

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

Coastal dining room with bistro chairs and a rustic wood table in an open concept floorplan.

How to protect a RH Dining Table, Coffee Table or Desk
You paid a pretty penny for it, so now you want to be sure to protect your RH dining table at all costs… Here’s how.

If you’ve been a RH, formerly known as Restoration Hardware, fan for long, you’ve probably fallen in love with their gorgeous dining room tables. They have the perfect matte finish, and they elevate any room. But… if you’ve ever done some research before buying, you’ve probably stumbled across a horror story or two about those gorgeous finishes.

I’m going to tell you my own.

The Sad Story

See, I fell in love with RH tables long before I had any idea how to shop like an interior designer. I spent years lusting after its perfectly rustic and worn finish, and finally, it was time to make my first “big” home purchase. You guessed it – that table was finally going to be mine. I couldn’t wait for the delivery truck to arrive, and after it did, I think I spent most of the afternoon walking in circles around the table of my dreams, admiring every last detail.

When dinnertime came round, I laid out placemats and coasters, telling my family to enjoy their food carefully. I was taking no chances with my brand new table, and thankfully, dinner went off without a hitch. As we settled in to enjoy our evening, my daughter, a toddler at the time, strolled around the house holding a single red M&M.

I’m sure you can imagine what happened next.

Later in the evening, I walked by my beautiful, perfect table one last time to admire it when I saw a conspicuous red streak. Even worse, when I rushed to clean it off, I took that lovely rustic finish off right with it. I was devastated. Our perfect table had not even lasted a single day.

Red stain and finish coming off of RH table after trying to wipe it.Close up of towel showing the finish removed from Restoration Hardware wood table.

The Damage
The table after I tried to remove the stain.  The towel shows the stain that wiped off the table.

It was a heartbreaking lesson, but I sure learned it! When we replaced the table, I knew I had to find a better way to keep it as pristine as the models you find in RH showrooms across the country. It became my mission to learn how to make this beautiful table more than museum-worthy. It had to become life-worthy.

Overhead shot of RH table 4 years after it was sealed showing minimal wear and tear.

The New Table 4 Years Later
Here is our replacement RH table today with minor wear and tear, despite getting put through the ringer of arts & crafts, spills, food and more.

The Solution to Protect A RH Dining Table

First things first: do I think it’s a little ridiculous that buyers have to find a way to preserve their tables? Yes. But we all do crazy things for what we love, right? I would absolutely still recommend the table to anyone who’s prepared to put in the work to preserve it. But thankfully, this work didn’t turn out to be too hard.

If you’ve been eyeing a Restoration Hardware table, go ahead and add Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish to your cart right now to protect it. Remember: our first table was destroyed by a tiny toddler with a tiny piece of chocolate on night one. Our second table, though, has been going strong for four years — and it’s all thanks to this incredible product.

Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish is a faux finish. It’s a non-yellowing, water-based clear varnish that minimizes sheen, so you’ll still get the RH look you love. The very day our second table came in, we varnished it with 2-3 thin coats. The entire process only took about 30 minutes! And while it’s probably due for a quick reseal this summer, the table looks better now after four years than our first table did after four hours, so it’s absolutely worth the upkeep.

Rustic dining table accompanied by bistro chairs and styled with white flowers.RH table four yers after it was sealed showing minimal damage.

How to Protect Your RH, Farmhouse or Reclaimed Wood Table

With Dead Flat Varnish, our table wipes clean easily. We use it every day, and in our house, spills are abundant. I’m thankful I don’t have to treat my everyday dining table as precious — although when my kids eat, I usually put a placemat down, but not for the reason you think. I’m not worried about spills seeping in, but the table is very textured, with lots of grooves and grain. The placemats keep me from incessantly wiping (and even vacuuming) crumbs from all of those little crevices.

Want to live as carefree as I do now? Grab your varnish and give yourself some piece of mind. Here’s how we did it.

  1. Make sure the table is as clean as possible.

As I’ve mentioned, varnishing your table should be the very first thing you do when it arrives! Don’t take a chance on a few meals and wait until the weekend. Seal it ASAP — and remember, do not use a damp cloth to clean it. That will wipe the finish right off, and you’ll join me (and countless others online) in the collective sob story. If your table is already used, I would recommend a quick vacuum to ensure every groove is crumb-free.

  1. Test the varnish in an inconspicuous spot.

I know this might seem excessive, but I don’t want you to take my word for it! Make sure that you are happy with the way this varnish looks once it’s dried before committing to the entire process.

  1. Grab a good paint brush.

If you’re pleased with your test spots, use a good paint brush to apply a thin coat all over the table, and allow it to dry. Repeat for 1-2 more coats, allowing the table to dry completely between each coat. Be especially careful to let the table dry completely before use, too!

Commonly Asked Questions

I’ve posted about this process on Instagram in the past, and a few questions always come to the surface. I want everyone to enjoy their dining experiences at their own tables for years to come, so I’m rounding up all of those questions and answering them here!

Can I use this to protect a table from Pottery Barn, or another similar type of wood dining table?

Yes, you can! Just make sure to follow the steps mentioned above – especially step 2. I cannot vouch for how the varnish can affect the existing look and feel of your specific table, so I’d highly encourage you to sample it in an inconspicuous spot, like the underside of the table, first.

How often should the varnish be reapplied to protect your RH dining table?

If your dining table gets heavy use, I recommend resealing it every two years. We haven’t followed my own advice — it’s been about four years since our original varnish, and we need to reseal it soon. I’ve noticed recently that the places my side my kids eat are starting to show a bit of wear from excessive wiping, but it’s still looking great, all things considered.

Coastal dining room next to large airy sunroom.

Did you notice a big difference in the color?

I barely noticed any difference at all, actually, which is why I recommend this particular varnish. But again, I’d test it on the bottom side of the table before sealing the whole table. Better safe than sorry!

Did you only seal the top of your table, or the pedestal, too?

We only sealed the top and have had no issues with the pedestal, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to seal the pedestal — especially if you have kids or pets who are prone to hide under there with things that may stain.

I hope this helps you preserve your Restoration Hardware table without the crisis that comes beforehand! We truly love this table, and I think the extra labor of love is well worth it. If you’d like to shop the table and everything else in my dining room, it’s just a click away!

Cafe Curtains Are Having a Moment

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

A Classic Reimagined
Cafe curtains are making a comeback, and for good reason. See how they can add privacy without taking light away from your home! | Image Credit: Design: Heidi Caillier | Photography: Haris Kenjar

If you haven’t already seen them billowing in the breeze all over your social media feeds, you’re about to — cafe curtains are the latest design trend, and I totally understand why! These gorgeous curtains have found out how to strike the perfect balance between practicality and beauty.

What Are Cafe Curtains?

Roman shades and long curtains may be the long-time darlings of window coverings, but well-made cafe curtains bring a level of tailored sophistication to any space. These breezy window treatments hang on the lower part of a window, allowing lots of natural light while still providing the privacy of more robust treatments. Simply slide them closed when privacy is needed — but even when they are closed, they don’t darken and close off the entire room. They’re easy to open and close as needed, making them a simple solution for a variety of spaces and styles. They really do provide the best of both worlds!

Where You’ll Find Cafe Curtains

As you may have noticed on social media, high end designers are gravitating toward the cafe curtain look in lots of different spaces. You’ll see them hanging in bathrooms — a space that looks beautiful in natural light but rarely gets it because of privacy. You’ll find them in kitchens, especially in smaller windows above sinks and countertops. Dining nooks and breakfast areas are also sporting cafe curtains, which makes sense, given that their namesake is the half-curtains that once dressed the windows of quaint country cafes. These curtains are versatile and stylish, and they really work in almost any room. I’ve seen them used in living rooms, home offices, and even bedrooms!

Why Cafe Curtains Are in the Spotlight

If you’re not already hooked on this new window treatment trend, I might just convince you to try them out by the end of this post. If you’ve been here for a while, you know that I’m a huge fan of natural light, but I also love adding dimension and texture to a space. This option allows you to have your cake and eat it too, enjoying the rays of sun while bringing a beautiful fabric into your space.

Linen is one of the most popular fabric choices for cafe curtains, and I love it! The lightweight, airy fabric gives the room a classic, sophisticated feel without hearkening back to the traditional curtains your grandma loved. They’re a fresh new take on an old trend. Leave your linen cafe curtains unlined for an even breezier look — they’ll still offer privacy, but they’ll let more light in.

Because cafe curtains require so much less fabric than traditional curtains, they’re an affordable option for customized window coverings. You can be chic without breaking the bank! I love an affordable decorative solution that gives off a high end look and feel.

How to Style Cafe Curtains in Your Space

Not sure how to bring the cafe curtain look into your space? There are plenty of ways to make it your own.

Pair them with beautiful hardware.

Contrasting the breezy feel of a linen curtain with metal hardware and sliding clips is a fun way to bring dimension into the room — not to mention you can bring some design cohesion by matching your hardware to cabinet pulls in the bathroom, the faucet in your kitchen, or a light fixture in your dining nook.

Add a tailored pleat.

If you’re curious about cafe curtains, but not ready for a totally “breezy” feel, add a tailored pleat! It will elevate the space and bring an air of traditional style to what could otherwise seem like a casual, coastal choice.

Tie together a color palette.

If you’ve wanted to up the ante on an accent color, cafe curtains are the perfect way to do it. Because they’re made with so much less fabric than other curtain options, you can play with your fabric and color choice without the look taking over the entire room.

Bathroom Pleats

See what I mean about a bathroom that lets the light in? This space by Yond Interiors is gorgeous, and these airy curtains allow you to soak in the sun while you soak in the tub, without sacrificing privacy. I love the tailored, pleated look here that fits the windows perfectly.

A Dreamy Hallway

You may never have thought about it before now, but this gorgeous space by by John B. Murray Architect proves that cafe curtains are perfect in a hallway! I especially love this look for a space with lots of windows on both sides. A full “valence and long curtain” look would have made this space feel narrow, but the white look with black hardware adds dimension and interest without taking away the light.

Beige Bathing Beauty

The color selection by Heidi Caillier Design is perfect — it marries the accent chair fabric to various tones in the wallpaper, giving the entire bathroom a thoughtfully cohesive look without being overly matching. This design combination makes the cafe curtains look anything but dated, combining traditional and modern touches perfectly.

Short Curtain, Large Window

This gorgeous bathroom by Phoebe Howard proves that cafe curtains are not meant only for smaller, shorter windows! In a spacious bathroom like this, they do an excellent job of breaking up the light and bright space with a pop of black hardware and a texture that brings interest to a corner that could otherwise feel a little stark. Bathrooms are full of hard surfaces and cold metals, and this is a perfect way to balance those things out.

Beautiful Bench Seating

I love a breakfast nook that mixes chairs with a built-in bench, and these minimalistic cafe curtains only made me fall even deeper. I’m obsessed with the way these curtains add just enough to this room by Amber Interiors without being bold, loud, or drawing too much attention. They’re a soft, sweet addition to a chunky table — the perfect pair.

The Traditional Treatment

These curtains might be the new trend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t honor their traditional roots! This look by Light & Dwell offers a timeless feel, and I simply can’t get enough of the soft light. I also love that the pendant light doesn’t have to compete with the curtains, since they’re at different levels in the room.

Pass the Croissants

Doesn’t this space by Josh Young transport you to a chic European cafe in your mind? Pairing the straight line of the cafe curtain hardware with the high arch and beautiful millwork around these large windows is absolutely stunning.

Darkened Dimension

This is proof that cafe curtains don’t have to belong in bright, airy spaces! This moody kitchen by Heidi Caillier is a dream come true, and the simple pleated curtains above the sink add a soft touch without taking away the desired dramatic effect of the room. I also love the warm linen tone — it connects beautifully to the flooring.

Around the Curve

I adore the heavier look these curtains have in this room by Heidi Caillier, especially since this is a bigger space with more windows than most of the other options I’ve gathered up today. They offer great privacy in a space that looks out on multiple angles.

Are you ready to try the cafe curtain trend yet? After we painted the bathroom in our cabin, the Belgian Treehouse, I knew I wanted to hang cafe curtains in that space. I just couldn’t give up lighting for privacy, and thankfully, these were the perfect solution.

5 Tips for Updating a Traditional Bathroom

Traditional Bathroom Ideas
If you want to honor your home’s traditional style while bringing modern updates to the bathroom, these simple ideas will give you the best of both worlds.

Recently, I had the privilege of redesigning the primary bathroom in my childhood home — which, yes, meant that my parents were my bosses on the Bluemont Bath project. It was so fun to bring an elevated, updated feel to a space I’ve known my entire life, while honoring its original, traditional style that we all still love.

I get it: sometimes, it can feel hard to know how to update a traditional space without compromising its classic style, especially when the rest of the home is still firmly set in its traditional ways. Learning to blend modern elements without losing the original charm is an art form, to be sure, and I learned a lot as we renovated the Bluemont Bath!

We took everything to the studs in this bathroom, bringing in new materials and adding details that paid homage to the original design and color palette. We wanted to honor this home’s roots, not cover them up! One of my favorite choices we made in this room: the custom flooring. The subtle checkerboard pattern is traditional while also offering a modern look that’s light and bright, and the custom 12×12 porcelain tiles made this floor totally unique. No matter what material you use, a patterned floor is a great way to update a traditional space.

A New Way to Think About Bathroom Design

Traditional bathrooms have long been known for gorgeous marble and clean white tones — which is beautiful, but on its own, it can make a space feel stale or cold. I truly believe that when it’s designed well, a bathroom can feel every bit as beautiful, warm, and inviting as a cozy living room. We may not think about this too often, but we use our bathrooms all the time. Why shouldn’t a space we step into multiple times a day feel like a spa, an everyday luxury we love to use?

In every bathroom I design, I try to incorporate elements that feel more like a living room than a bathroom. These choices might be unexpected, but those “non-bathroom” elements are often the key to elevating a space and creating an inviting atmosphere.

I also love to venture outside of the “typical” bathroom choices as I choose natural materials, shower tiles, and finishes. In the Bluemont Bath, we mixed various brass and nickel finishes for a look that’s somehow both totally modern and completely classic. By steering clear of uniformity in our hardware, lighting, and accent choices, we brought a new look to an older space. Matching is not the only way to create flow and continuity!

5 Tips for Updating a Traditional Bathroom

If you’re looking for tried-and-true traditional bathroom ideas, here are a few of my favorite updates and unexpected choices that can make a huge difference.

1. Add foliage.

Honestly, this is my easy trick for bringing life into any space — no matter what kind of room you’re redesigning. Greenery is the perfect organic element to add texture and color to a room, and even better, you have endless possibilities!

Grab fresh florals for a sensory upgrade that wows with sight and scent, or choose a few dramatic branches to bring natural texture into a space. Select plants or florals that match your style and bring some visual interest to the room, especially in bathrooms that can appear cold and sparse otherwise.

Feverfew daisies in a vintage white pitcher bring greenery to a bathroom.

2. Use drapery.

If your bathroom has a large window, I always recommend drapery in the bathroom. It might seem a bit impractical, but in my opinion, that’s what makes it magical. Draperies add both privacy and personality to a room, and they give you a chance to soften the harshness of so many hard surfaces in a bathroom.

We made sure to design our Bluemont space in a way that the curtains were far from the soaking tub, so we never had to worry about splashing. We also doubled up with electronic shades for privacy, because we didn’t want the curtain fabric to be touched day after day. If you’re concerned about the longevity of fabric in your bathroom, I totally understand! Thankfully, there are so many great perennial or indoor/outdoor fabric selections these days. They’re specifically designed to withstand the elements, so moisture won’t be a problem.

A vintage inspired rug, blue delicately patterned curtains and a wood cocktail table adorn a traditional bathroom with a white oak vanity and marble checkerboard floors.William Morris pleated curtains in bathroom with checkerboard marble floors.

3. Incorporate natural wood.

When most people think of traditional bathrooms, marble immediately comes to mind. It’s a beautiful material, and I absolutely love using it! But it’s important to balance that cold, sleek look with some textured warmth, and natural wood is the perfect solution.

In the Bluemont Bath, we actually opted for porcelain and Quartz over marble, but softening the space with wood had the exact same effect. We used light white oak for a classic vanity that creates beautiful contrast with the more stark elements in the room. It also complements the brass finishes perfectly!

Modern bathroom with traditional influences including brass lighting and a vintage inspired rug.

4. Embrace brass.

Want your bathroom to feel customized? Layer and mix your metals. Truthfully, there are lots of great metal combinations that mix warm and cool tones, but we’re partial to unlacquered brass in bathrooms. It allows for natural oxidation that adds character over time.

In the Bluemont Bath, we actually mixed four different finishes, if you can believe it! We used a combo of nickel, a stainless steel/brushed nickel hybrid, and steel, but of course the real star of the show is the unlacquered brass. Brass plays well with others and adds natural warmth and patina, and it really does get better with time! There’s a good reason the brass and marble pairing has been a classic since the days of ancient Greece and Rome – it really works in almost any space.

Linear brass sconces frame large nickel mirrors above a white oak cabinet with soapstone counters.Brass shelving decorated with bathroom accessories and vintage art.

5. Use vintage.

As we renovated the Bluemont Bath, we incorporated vintage art from The Atelier Collection, and recovered a stool my parents already had. You can shop all of our bathroom selections right here, but your options are really endless when it comes to vintage finds for a unique bathroom. A vintage rug or stool adds warmth and character, especially when you’ve chosen modern elements with your shower tile or flooring selections. One-of-a-kind- pieces really ground a room, adding an inviting, lived in feel that honors the traditional style of the original space.

Simple Flower Arrangements That Brighten Up Any Space

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

Is there anything sweeter than the smell of fresh flowers? A simple bouquet can brighten anyone’s day — and bring beauty into any space. Almost every week, I find myself selecting a few stems for easy floral arrangements for our home, and the process of selecting and arranging them brings me joy without fail.

Flower arranging doesn't have to be complicated. My favorite hack is to use one flower in bulk, like I did here with 3 bundles of white feverfew daisies.

Simple Flower Arrangements 101
Get the designer’s approach to simple flower arrangements for your home, plus the secret to making your own beautiful bouquet!

Here’s the best news of all: floral arranging doesn’t have to be complicated. Bringing a bouquet of  fresh flowers into your home is simpler than you think. In fact, you can create a gorgeous arrangement using just one type of flower — and becoming your own florist is a skill you’ll treasure for the rest of your life. Truly. It’s a relaxing, therapeutic hobby for any age!

If you’ve followed me for a while, I’m sure you picked up on the fact that flowers are pretty high on my list of loves, right up there with throw pillows and great design. Fresh flowers can transform a space in no time!

When it comes to floral arrangements, simple is better. The ultimate florist secret: one type of flower will do the trick! If you look closely at the luxurious rooms you find in magazines or on Pinterest, you’ll often see simple arrangements with just one type of flower or greenery. In this case, bigger is, in fact, better — make sure you have enough blooms to really fill out the arrangement! Selecting just one flower and creating a full look will offer any space a sophisticated, elevated look.

Spoiler alert
Every single flower arrangement in this post uses only one flower variety!

The Secrets of Simple Floral Design

If you’ve never arranged flowers in a vase or jar, it might seem like it’d be a difficult task. I promise, it’s not! It’s one of the simplest ways to brighten up a room — and the beautiful scent doesn’t hurt, either!  I really do believe floral design is for everyone. Simple arrangements are perfect for gifts, centerpieces, and decor. I’m almost exclusively self-taught, but I’ve picked up some tips and tricks over the years! Here are the floral secrets everyone should know.

Pick your own flowers.

One of my styling “secret weapons” is picking flowers from my yard to arrange inside. Over the years, I’ve chosen annual and perennial plants that look beautiful in a vase when they bloom. If I want lilacs, hydrangeas, wildflowers, or roses, I simply step outside my door for a free flower-selecting experience.

There’s no need to mix it up.

While I like to experiment with artful arrangements, mixing in a variety of flowers and greenery, I often find that when it comes to floral arrangements, simple is better. My ultimate florist secret: one type of flower will do the trick!

Ready, Set, Throw: How to Choose & Style Throw Pillows

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

Pillows Made Easy
Picking your throw pillow cover combinations might give you heart palpitations — so let me show you the EASY way to style throw pillows.

If you know me, it goes without saying: the only thing I love more than a good collection of throw pillow covers is my family (and maybe a good cup of coffee).

If you’re looking for a simple way to change your space without breaking the bank, learning to style throw pillows is the perfect place to begin. First things first: invest in a few good inserts. Once you have your shapes and sizes defined, you can grab a range of pillow covers to swap out as the seasons change – or honestly, anytime the mood strikes. But before you hit “add to cart,” let’s go over some throw pillow basics that will give your couch an elevated, but not overly decorated, look.

Blue and neutral throw pillows styled on leather sofa next to a green lamp and white lacquered coffee table.moody living room with family photos.

Insert Your Style Upgrade Here

Before you select colors and patterns for your throw pillow covers, it’s important to choose the right inserts.

How many throw pillows do you need?

Well, that depends. What style is your couch or bed, and what’s the vibe of your room as a whole? Even numbers of throw pillows fit best in traditional spaces. They offer symmetry and balance on couches, and they give a clean and orderly look to beds. However, in most situations, I opt for an odd number of pillows, which brings a more artful, modern look to any space.

Something to keep in mind: a few larger pillows look more refined and fresh than a lot of smaller pillows piled together. In this case, less is actually more. For a standard sized sofa, I’d recommend 5-7 pillows. A smaller loveseat only needs 3. For beds, I recommend 3 (since you’ll also have your regular bed pillows/shams). My go-to sofa combo is asymmetrical and relaxed: on one side, I pair a 24” pillow and a 20” one – on the opposite side, I spice up that same pairing with a lumbar pillow, or any shape that adds depth and a different texture.

Serena & Lily coastal throw pillows on bed.

What pillow inserts should you choose?

Honestly, there’s no right answer to this question – but the wrong answer is definitely choosing pillows all in the same size. Mixing and matching pillow covers gives a laid-back look that’s cozy and desirable.

I usually recommend choosing three different pillow sizes and two different pillow shapes – just like my earlier example of two square pillows (24” and 20”) and a lumbar pillow for a standard sofa. Purchasing a 24” pillow insert is a great place to begin! That size is a great backdrop for a pillow mix-and-match. In front of your 24” pillows, you can layer 20”-22” squares, lumbar supports, circular pillows, or any other smaller shape that adds dimension.

When it comes to materials, consider the fill of your inserts – they’ll definitely affect the final look of your couch or bed! Feather or down fill will give that slouchy, squishy look, while foam or synthetic fill offers more structure. This might seem counterintuitive, but often, the slouchy pillows look most luxurious! Decide how you want your couch to look (and feel!) and select your inserts accordingly.

Guide to how to style throw pillows by pillow size.

Cover the Basics with Your Throw Pillow Combinations

Now that you’ve chosen your inserts, you can bring your color sensibility to the table and find covers that finish the look.

Use a color scheme.

Check out your current space and decide on a color scheme – the room itself will usually provide that with a quick glance! Throw pillows covers are a great way to introduce color into a neutral space, or vice versa – calm down a room that already has enough bright colors. Pillow covers are also a fantastic way to draw attention to the accent colors you already love from other pieces in the room, like artwork or rugs. In my own home, I used my rug as the color inspiration for our family room pillows, and in the sunroom, I used neutrals and blues that mimicked the room’s overall color palette.

Two-3 colors is a complete color scheme when it comes to pillows! No need to find 5 colors that work – keep it simple to keep the room from becoming cluttered or visually overwhelming. If your room is neutral or you can’t find an obvious color palette to pull from, that’s okay! Just select your favorite color or a pillow cover you already love and build from there. If you have a patterned pillow you’ll be keeping, pull your solid colors from there!

Sunroom with large windows, white walls and transitional decor.

When in doubt, start with a print.

Floral patterns and organic prints make a great foundation to build your pillow scheme upon. Florals are my personal favorite – they can be the most difficult to pair, but they also add the most visual interest to a piece of furniture. It’s best practice to pick the most “difficult” or unique pillow to pair first, then build solid tones or muted patterns around it.

If florals aren’t your thing, organic prints are a fantastic alternative. What is an organic print? Think about patterns inspired by nature – curved lines or ripples that mimic water, texture that imitates rock, or anything with movement.

After your floral or organic print is selected, move on to geometric shapes and prints that bring balance and symmetry to your design. Stripes and plaids are full of y lines, grids, and repetition, so they counterbalance the asymmetrical movement of florals and organics. Mixing patterns in this way builds interest, but it also creates some much needed dimension in the room.

For this secondary pattern, I recommend keeping your colors neutral – or if not, choosing a color that carefully matches your floral print to keep your pillows from looking cluttered, mismatched, or busy. My foolproof combo? Floral, solid, stripe. You can never go wrong with that trio!

Neutral floral throw pillows on leather sofa. Solid and print throw pillow combo.
One Sofa, Six Ways
Not sure what to do? Start with your favorite print!

Vary your scale.

As you’re selecting your pillows, get creative by playing with scale. Don’t pick patterns that are alike in scale – like tiny flowers and small polka dots, or large organic lines and thick, bold stripes. Instead, mixing a large scale pattern with something more delicate will create contrast that gives a curated feel to the look.

Neutral throw pillow combo mixing patterns. Neutral blue patterned throw pillow combo on leather sofa.
One Sofa, Six Ways
Streamline your selections by choosing a color scheme, then play with the scale of your prints for a curated look.

Add solids and textures.

I love a great patterned throw pillow, but I always make sure to incorporate 1-3 solid color selections into my palette for couches and beds. Our eyes need places to rest so that patterns don’t make a space feel busy or overwhelming, and solid colors offer that brief break or pause as we scan a room. Solid pillow covers are a great way to incorporate texture into your design, too! Chunky wool knits, mottled leather, smooth silk, fresh linen, or tasseled accents all add warmth and dimension that elevate your final look.

While it looks and feels like drinkers have been enjoying this fruity concoction for ages, the real story is that it was created in 1984 by U.K. bartender Dick Bradsell. (He also invented the Espresso Martini!) It has been enjoyed by many drinkers ever since and has found it’s way on to many classic cocktail lists. It’s easy to see why. It’s just the right amount of sweet and sour!

Plus don’t the blueberries look beautiful? You know how I love a drink that infuses fruit into it! For a non-alcoholic spin on a fruit infused drink try our black cherries and blueberries infused water.

What you need to make a Bramble Cocktail

Fresh blackberries: Blackberries are what turn a gin sour into a Bramble Cocktail! You’ll need six to make the drink, plus extra to garnish. If you don’t have fresh blackberries you can use 1 ounce of crème de mure (blackberry liquor) instead.

Gin:  We recommend using a dry gin with a citrus flavor, like Tanqueray Rangpur Gin. For a even fruitier taste, try Brockmans Gin, which includes blackberries and blueberries.

Simple syrup:  This recipe calls for just one ounce. If you find the drink too sour, you can increase the amount of simple sugar syrup. You can use store brought or homemade simple syrup.

Lemon juice: We like to squeeze our own the freshest taste, but you can use store bought lemon juice, as well. If you prefer, you can substitute the lemon juice with lime juice.

Ice: We recommend using plenty of ice to keep your drink fresh and cold!

Easy to make and healthy peaches & cream popsicles

What you will love about this peach popsicles recipe

They’re super easy to make! You only need about 10 minutes or less to prep this delicious warm weather treat! All you have to do is blend up the ingredients, transfer the mixture and a few peaches into a popsicle mold, then freeze. Done!

Our recipe is healthy and kid friendly! As a mom of three, my favorite recipes are the ones that my kids think are a treat, when they really are a just sly way of getting them to eat healthy.

They’re easily customizable. Say peaches aren’t your jam or maybe, just maybe, you want them to be a little less healthy and a little more sugary (No judgement here! I’ve got a major sweet tooth.) This recipe is easy to adapt to your preferences!

They taste delicious, creamy and refreshing! The taste is really the best part. They’re just something about a peaches a cream popsicle that can’t be beat.

The riper the better!
For the best peach popsicles, use the ripest peaches you can find that aren’t mushy.

Homemade Popsicles vs Commercial Popsicles

It’s probably pretty obvious that these homemade popsicles are healthier than commercial pops. Not to mention, our peach popsicle recipe is completely dairy free!

The popsicles you pick up on your grocery store run, are usually made of mostly water and sugar, along with food coloring and artificial flavors. In contrast, our popsicles are made from pureed peaches, have a nice texture to them and are stuffed full of nutritional value. To top it off, they really do taste like biting into a fresh juicy piece of fruit with the added benefit of simutaneously cooling you off. Who doesn’t love biting into a cool popsicle on a hot summer day?

All you need is 3 simple ingredients

Coconut cream: This popsicle recipe is dairy-free but for an even creamier popsicle you can substitute the coconut cream for milk or vanilla yogurt. Personally, we like mixing milk with a heavier dairy product. Use a 1/2 cup of milk with 1 cup yogurt or whipping cream.

Fresh peaches: The key to picking the perfect peach is make sure the flesh is tender to the touch, soft, but not mushy.

Maple syrup: While we like using maple syrup, honey is an excellent alternative.

This recipe makes a pale pastel popsicle. For a stronger orange color, you can add a couple drops of food coloring. For a little added flavor, you can also try adding 1 tsp of vanilla.

Tips for removing popsicles from popsicle molds

The best way to remove popsicles from a popsicle mold is to run warm water over the bottom of the mold. Once you’ve removed the popsicles, immediately place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Then freeze for about 30 minutes.

Can I make these popsicles with other fruits?

Yes! You can use almost any fruit you can puree. We love using other stone fruits, like plums, cherries and nectarines, but you can also get adventurous with other fruits or even combining fruits! Try watermelon, strawberries, pineapples or kiwi.

If you try a different fruit let us know how it goes in the comments below!

We usually devour them before we can even think about freezing them, but if stored in an airtight container and frozen they can last for up to 3 months!

I don’t have a popsicle mold, can I still make them?

Yes! You can use Dixie cups or a similar small paper cup. After filling the cups with the pureed mixture and fruit, top with foil and insert your wood sticks. Freeze until solid and then peel off the paper cup.

Can I use canned or frozen peaches?

Yes! If you crave peach popsicles when they’re out if season you can use canned or frozen peaches. However, you may need to adjust the amount of maple syrup. Canned peaches tend to be sweeter due to the syrup, while frozen peaches sometimes aren’t sweet enough.

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my disclosure policy.

These savory Belgian cinnamon waffles are super crispy on the outside and soft, tender and fluffy inside. It’s not your standard homemade waffle recipe. Plus, they are easy to make and can be frozen as well!

Belgian Delicious Belgian waffle recipe served with whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries.

Belgian waffles are a classic breakfast and brunch staple that are so popular because of their amazing crispy golden exterior. Not to mention, their deep pockets are perfect for holding syrup and butter! I love getting waffles for breakfast or brunch at restaurants, but they’re truly just as easy to make at home!

My family would have these cinnamon waffles every single weekend if I let them. And I really should because they take less than 15 minutes to make for the entire family. But there’s just so many good breakfast recipes out there, like these chocolate yogurt parfaits, for instance!

We like to serve our cinnamon Belgian waffles with powdered sugar, syrup, sliced fruit, and sometimes whipped cream for topping! These cinnamon waffles make a hearty breakfast on their own, but, they are also great with savory sides like scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, or bacon!

Another unique way to serve them is in a brunch charcuterie board! But be warned, your guest will love it so much they will be asking for your recipe the entire party.

What Makes These The Best Homemade Waffles Ever!

Another bold claim I know! There are millions of waffle recipes out there so why should you make this one? Easy! As in they are easy to make! Plus, these waffles are perfectly crisp and golden on the outside while being light and fluffy on the inside, with cinnamon for a little extra spice. Traditional American waffles can often come out flat, but I can assure you this authentic Belgian waffle recipe does not.

Ingredients in our Cinnamon Belgian Waffles Recipe

Eggs: The best eggs for the recipe are large eggs. The eggs in this recipe don’t have to be at room temperature because you will be whisking them. Some waffle recipes call for whisking egg whites but that’s not necessary for this one. Whisking eggs usually results in fluffy waffles.

Vanilla extract: Pure vanilla extract is the way to go with this recipe but imitation vanilla will do just fine.

Ground cinnamon: This spice is optional but will take the flavor of your waffles to a whole other level! Feel free to add more if you’d like.

Butter: Use melted unsalted butter. Olive oil can also be used if you prefer.

Sugar: I use white granulated sugar for this recipe but you can use brown sugar as well.

Whole milk: The milk you use needs to be at room temperature. You can use buttermilk or non-dairy milk like almond milk for this recipe. If you choose to use buttermilk the waffle batter will end up being thicker than whole milk waffle batter.

Baking powder: Baking powder helps the waffles rise and makes them fluffy on the inside.

All-purpose flour: Some people sieve the flour but you don’t have to. I usually don’t.

Toppings: You can put whatever you like on your waffles. People have been known to put fresh fruit, whipped cream, maple syrup, and even fried chicken!

How to Make Fluffy Waffles Every Time!

These fluffy, crispy waffles are made by first preheating the waffle maker, then separately mixing the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients. Just make sure you beat your eggs into soft, stiff peaks before adding the other wet ingredients.

You then combine all the ingredients. The secret to fluffy waffles is making sure not to over mix! After that, place them on a waffle maker and cook them to crispy golden brown perfection.

Homemade Cinnamon Belgian Waffles FAQ

What’s the difference between Belgian waffles and classic waffles?

Belgian waffles are yeasted waffles that are more on the thicker side compared to classic American waffles. They also tend to have deeper grooves than American waffles.

How long does it take for whole eggs to get into stiff peaks?

It usually takes about 5-8 minutes.

Can I use buttermilk instead of regular milk?

You certainly can! Your waffle batter will be thicker and firmer than those made using regular milk! Also, the acidity in buttermilk usually reacts with the baking powder, which causes the waffles to rise.

Can I substitute the vegetable oil with melted butter or avocado oil instead?

Certainly. Feel free to use either one of those.

A waffle recipe that is too good not to eat! Served with whip cream, maple syrup and fruit.

How can I reheat waffles?

Putting waffles in a toaster oven on the lowest setting is usually a great way to reheat waffles.

Could I add mashed banana to the batter to make banana waffles?

You certainly can. Just substitute the 2 eggs with 1/2 a cup of mashed bananas. You can use frozen, ripe, or overripe bananas.

How can I make this recipe eggless for someone with an egg allergy?

Flax eggs or applesauce are good egg substitutes. The equivalent of 1 flax egg can be made by mixing 1 tablespoon of flax seeds with 1 1/2 tablespoons of water. You can also replace 1 egg with 1/4 cup of applesauce.

How do I keep my waffles warm while making them?

Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and then preheat your oven to 200 degrees. Place your made waffles on a wire rack that’s on top of a baking pan and put them on the middle oven rack. Be sure not to stack them. Doing this will also make your waffles crispy.
Waffles ready to be served with lots of fruit.

How do I prevent my waffles from drying out?

Covering waffles with a dishcloth will keep them from drying out.

Can I make waffle batter a day in advance and put it in the fridge?

Yes! Be sure to put it in a clean airtight container. The waffles won’t be as light as the ones made the same day though. You can make waffles with batter that you’ve just taken out of the fridge. You don’t need to let the batter rest.

What’s the best way to freeze waffles?

I recommend putting a piece of parchment paper in between each waffle and then placing the stack in a freezer bag. This ensures they don’t stick together and works well!

Can I use a pre-made waffle mix instead?

You can, but nothing beats homemade waffles, they are the best waffles ever. They fall under the category of quick breakfasts and are perfect for a weekend morning.
